The Lower Buck Inn, Waddington, has been the centre of village life since it was built in 1760.
Tales of ghostly happenings have become folklore in the village. So much so that a group of staff members decided to investigate for themselves, raising money in the process for the North West Ambulance Service.
Jenny Barnsley, Chloé Hartshorn. Lucy Knowles, Gemma Tithe and Hannah Blanc closed up the pub as usual at closing time and got ready for their sponsored sleep-in. They were shocked when, shortly afterwards, one of the girls saw a ghostly figure in the front bar.
Jenny, who works behind the bar explained: “We decided to have a sleepover and seance to find out for ourselves if the pub really is haunted as everyone says. First, we lit candles and asked if anyone was present and we immediately heard scratching and banging noises coming from upstairs. Chloé then saw a man in the doorway of the front bar and shortly afterwards, we took a picture as the room had gone cold. We were amazed to see what looked like separate images of a man and a girl in two different pictures.”
Landlord Andrew Warburton has long had the feeling he’s not alone behind the bar: “A pub this old is bound to have its history ingrained within the walls. Generations of locals and visitors have celebrated and commiserated here and it has a lovely warm feeling about the place. If there are any ghosts here, I think they’re definitely of the friendly variety!”
The ghostly goings-on have provided a great talking point in the pub and £300 was raised by the girls for their chosen cause, so it looks like Andrew might be right – these ghosts are definitely well meaning and generous in spirit!

ReplyDeleteHoly Crap! Yes I see him in the middle but I can also see a girl/ woman in the hallway on the left. Her face is at the top of the window there. Thats the first one I saw, apart from those two electric dot things. LOL!!! wow!!
ReplyDeleteOooh, that's freaky stuff Chris! (Glad that these ladies were able to catch this stuff on film and see it with their own eyes! What a real treat - or scare (depending on how you look at it, of course) - must've been for them!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what era these two spirits are from! (The girl to the left, in the door way, appears to have a long white dress on - with long, dark hair, that goes just past her shoulders.)
I also wonder why they didn't makes themselves known - as clearly as they did here - before the investigation was started! (Maybe things were just too "busy" for them, during the times the pub was open - and decided to wait until the pub was closed to come out and scout about?) :-)
At any rate, this is a *FANTASTIC* picture - very, very interesting! (I just hope these ladies have the willpower to back and do another investigation sometime soon - and perhaps get more great photos!) :-D

ReplyDeleteLooks very much like a long exposure photo (3-5 secs), where two people have moved out of the picture after momentarily being stationary in shot, looks like the person in the foreground is holding a candelabra and moved off with it. See my profile pic, a great one where I have taken a picture of myself beside a bonfire, after momentarily standing in one place, move 1 step forward and sideways, you have a "ghost" looking over your shoulder, Try it for yourself, set your camera on 100iso and the highest F setting, make sure the camera is mounted on a tripod or table, because the room is so dark and the camera set up to be so insensitive will not detect the person moving. This doesn't mean the pub isn't haunted, but of course, and I am not suggesting that they are, the pub owners might be using the story as a way to boost low patronage.

ReplyDeleteYou could well be right as that explanation is highly plausible. But like all these events, nobody from here was party to them so from my perspective, the verdict is open.
I always prefer to be present when these pictures are captured as at least then I would have more background to it.
Appreciate very much your explanation - and the `boosting` of visitors by photography is a common enough ruse:)
